Himalayan Plumegrass is a perennial grass with stems
1-3 m tall, 0.5-1 cm in diameter, many-noded, hairless or hairy below
panicle. Leaf sheaths are longer than internodes, mouth bearded; leaf
blades linear-elliptic, 30-50 x 1.5-2 cm, hairless, lower surface
glaucous, tapering to base and tip, tip tapering; ligule 2.3-2.5 mm.
Flower-panicles are elliptic or oblong in outline, nodding, 15-40 cm,
golden brown, branched, axis hairless or hairy; racemes 3-10 cm; axis
internodes 2.5-4 mm, fringed with hairs with long silky hairs.
Spikelets are 4-6 mm; callus hairs slightly shorter to longer than
spikelet, white or pale yellow; lower glume lanceshaped to
elliptic-oblong, cartilaginous, golden brown, glossy, thinner and paler
near tip, back hairless or sparsely to densely hairy below middle,
upper margins fringed with hairs, tip bifinely toothed. Himalayan
Plumegrass is found on grassy hillsides, at altitudes of 300-2700 m, in
the Himalayas to South China and SE Asia. Flowering: August-October.
